Only a few years ago, Ekrem İmamoğlu represented a new political promise for Turkey. His victory as Istanbul mayor in 2019 made him a symbol of democratic renewal for millions. But recent events have cast a shadow over that optimism.
On 19 March 2025, İmamoğlu was detained by Turkish authorities as part of a corruption investigation. Four days later, a court ordered his formal arrest and pretrial detention. As of now, he remains in custody, facing accusations of financial misconduct. Earlier reports also linked him to allegations of ties to terrorism. More than 20 officials were arrested alongside him, and over 100 individuals have been detained in connection with the same investigation.
The arrest has sparked widespread public reaction. Protesters filled İstanbul’s streets, while civil society leaders criticised the prosecution as politically motivated. His party, the CHP, condemned the move as an attack on democratic opposition. Yet, beyond the immediate outrage, the situation comes with equally strong and complex questions about power, accountability, and the state of Turkish democracy.
İmamoğlu’s detention occurs at a time when concerns about judicial independence in Turkey are already pronounced. The rapid pace and scale of the crackdown have led some to suggest it reflects a calculated effort by the ruling establishment to neutralise a popular political rival. For those who saw İmamoğlu as more than just an alternative but as a genuine reformer, the allegations pose difficult questions regardless of their political context.
The accusations of corruption and the abuse of public office have now surfaced in relation to a figure previously regarded as a symbol of integrity. The vision of a democratic transformation was, in fact, more fragile than many had hoped.
Yet, blindly defending the opposition, regardless of the circumstances, simply because they stand against the government is neither fair nor conducive to a healthy democratic process. To disregard the charges without proper review is to risk both justice and public trust. .
The legal process will determine İmamoğlu’s fate. For now, his supporters and critics alike watch and wait.
